Once upon a time, back when Metallica was recording what would become one of the defining albums of thrash metal ‘Master of Puppets’, a funny incident unfolded. Drummer Lars Ulrich, being the notorious prankster that he is, decided to have a little fun with the album’s title track. During a recording session, Ulrich swapped out James Hetfield’s microphone with a fake rubber one and started to record. Hetfield, completely oblivious, performed the song with full gusto and raging metal energy, only to burst out laughing when he realized the mic swap. This unplanned comic relief seeped through the intense recording phase and gave the members a much-needed light-hearted moment. Even amidst the thunderous chords and blazing solos, this funny story reminds us that metal gods too have their funny moments. However, just like their music, they ensure their pranks are ‘hardwired’ to crack you up!
